Guatemala Field School: Global Community Engagement
Interdisiplinary Field School in Global Community Engagement: Pathologies of Power in Guatemala
This course was open to students of all majors and disciplinary backgrounds. It was of particular interest to students who wanted to learn more about global human rights, strategies of community activism and resistance, North-South solidarity politics, corporate accountability, criminal justice, environmental issues and natural resource management, and international development.
The first two weeks of the course (held on the University of Guelph campus) were an in-class overview of Guatemala, both historical and current, with a special focus on the issues mentioned above. The following two weeks were an educational-seminar in Guatemala, travelling extensively together to many regions and communities in order to witness and learn more about the issues that are the focus of this course. During the final segment of the course, back on the U of G campus, students prepared final projects in the form of community presentations, short films, photo exhibits or other creative format intended for public dissemination.
