USA Field School: Art Cities - Los Angeles and Las Vegas

This 3-week Field School immersed students in the visual and built environments of both Los Angeles and Los Vegas - two cities whose distinct geographical circumstances and histories have shaped urban development and, in turn, fundamentally informed the art and artistic representation of each.  The cities provided the opportunity to explore the dynamic connection between art and context from multiple perspectives as civic, industrial, and environmental spaces, as well as Indigenous landscapes.  The class spent one week on the U of G campus learning about ideas and issues related to art and the environment, followed by one week in each of the U.S. cities engaging in experiential learning through site visits and tours, as well as face-to-face encounters with researchers, artists, and cultural figures.  Site visits in Las Vegas included the UNLV Design Center, Fremont Street and the Strip, the Venetian Hotel, a desert tour, and the Hoover Dam.  Visits in Los Angeles included UCLA, Hollywood/Beverly Hills, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Neon Museum, and the Mapping Indigenous LA project.

This international field school was open to students from all disciplines at the University of Guelph.
